“Vanity of vanities, said Kohelet; everything is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 12:8). “Vanity of vanities” – it is taught: When a wealthy person takes possession of a good item, at first he is desirous of it, but when it grows old for him, he uses it for trampling. A poor person, too, whose portion is meager, his eyes are directed to claim what the wealthy person rejects. This one has desire and that one has desire. They are both equal in terms of the grave; “everything is vanity.”
Ecclesiastes Rabbah 12:9
